Brandenburger Tor
The Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin’s most important monuments—a landmark with over two hundred years of history. A former symbol of the divided city, visitors used to climb an observation platform to get a glimpse of the world behind the Iron Curtain, on the other side of the barren “death-strip” that separated east from west Berlin, geographically and politically. It was here on 12 June 1987 that Ronald Regan issued his stern command to his Cold War adversary, admonishing him with the words: “Mr. Gorbachev – tear down this wall!” The speech delivered to West Berliners was also audible on the east side of the Gate and echoed President von Weizsacker’s words, which translate as: “The German question is open as long as the Brandenburg Gate is closed.”

Government Quarter – political buildings
A walk through this district takes you from the Pariser Platz to the embassies of Austria, India, Egypt and South Africa, as well as the state representatives of Baden-Württemberg and Nordrhein-Westfalen. There, in the Tiergarten triangle, a new “city in the city” has come to life. Next to the CDU Federal Office and many luxury apartments, you will come across the five Nordic embassies in a building ensemble that is encased by an enormous copper band.
The skyline over Berlin is impossible to imagine without the glass dome of the Berliner Reichstag, which was extensively modified and rehabilitated by the English architect Sir Norman Foster. Constructed between 1884 and 189 by the architect Paul Wallots, the building is a mirror of German history. The history was also adopted by the architects Axel Schulte and Charlotte Frank’s urban planning overall concept, “bond of the federation”.

History of the Berlin Wall
East Germany and the Berlin Wall
Here you can see original boards created by Dr Rainer Hildebrandt in the 1960s, who worked with journalists, escape organizers and protesters to assemble concise outlines of the Berlin Wall’s background and creation, and other key events in East Germany’s history, such as the 17 June 1953 uprisings. You can also examine original artifacts used during many of the infamous escapes from East Germany – from escape cars to hot air balloons, from homemade mini-submarines to deceptively hollow surfboards. This permanent exhibition is a testament to the ingenuity of the human mind when faced with perilous circumstances.
