Staying safe in Berlin
As is the case in all large cities, crime rates vary greatly from area to area. While Berlin is rated as a low-risk destination, crime does occur there. Petty and opportunistic street crime, such as bag snatching and pickpocketing, is the main threat for business travellers, and such thefts frequently occur in tourist and shopping areas, marketplaces, transport hubs, and other crowded areas.
Berlin's city centre is generally safe and enjoys a high level of security. However, it is advisable to avoid the Tiergarten park and the Nollendorfplatz-Potsdamerstrasse areas after dark, and to steer clear of crime-prone eastern districts such as Marzahn, Lichtenberg, Rudow, Hellersdorf, and Hohenschönhausen.
While there is a latent but credible risk of international terrorism, it currently poses more of an incidental than a direct threat. Protests for political, environmental, and socio-economic reasons regularly take place in Berlin, but they are usually peaceful and well policed. Nevertheless, it is recommended that travellers avoid all protests and demonstrations.
To help ensure a safe visit to Berlin, it is essential to exercise vigilance and take the following precautions:
- Be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for pickpockets in transportation hubs and areas frequented by tourists.
- Use caution if you must walk on the streets at night, even in groups.
- Use reliable transportation options, such as licensed taxis or reputable ride-sharing services.
- Maintain good "situational awareness" and report any suspicious packages or behavior to the police.
- Do not wear or display anything in public that appears of great value (e.g., watches and jewelry).
- Use caution when using your mobile telephone in public locations.
- Only use ATM machines located within bank premises and other secure locations.
- Do not carry your original passport with you, carry a copy instead. Keep important travel documents securely stored in a hotel safe or another secure location.
- Ensure your credit card does not leave your control to avoid fraud.
- Familiarize yourself with the hotel's emergency exit locations and routes.
- In the event of a security or medical emergency, immediately contact the police or fire department (dial 110). At the hotel, call the front desk.
