Staying safe in London
As in all large cities, crime rates vary greatly from area to area. Whilst London is rated as a LOW-risk destination, crime does happen there. Petty and opportunistic street crime (mostly bag snatching and pickpocketing) is the main threat for business travelers, and such thefts frequently occur in tourist and shopping areas, marketplaces, transportation hubs, and other crowded areas.
London's city center is generally safe, even at night, though ungated parks should be avoided after dark. In some locations (especially less affluent neighborhoods in the north and east of the city and elsewhere on its fringes), gun crime, mugging and vehicle theft pose a problem.
There is a latent but credible risk of international terrorism, although it currently poses more of an incidental than a direct risk.
Protests for political, environmental, and socio-economic reasons sometimes occur but are well policed and usually peaceful. Climate-related protests are a regular occurrence, often organised by the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ and ‘Just Stop Oil’ activist movements. Street protests and demonstrations should be avoided as a rule.
You must exercise vigilance to ensure a safe visit. The following are recommended precautions:
- Be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for pick-pockets in crowded locations.
- Use caution if you must walk on the streets at night, even in groups.
- Maintain good ‘situational awareness’ and report any suspicious packages or behavior to the police.
- Do not wear or display in public anything that appears of great value (e.g., jewelry).
- Use caution if using your mobile telephone in public locations.
- Only use ATM machines that are located within bank premises and other secure locations.
- Do not carry your passport with you, but instead carry a copy.
- Make sure your credit card does not leave your control to avoid fraud.
- Familiarize yourself with the hotel’s emergency exit locations and routes.
- Immediately contact the police or fire department (dial 999) in the event of a security or medical emergency. At the hotel, call the front desk.
A note on information security when traveling abroad
- When using personal computers, smart phones, and other digital devices, use caution when deciding to use personal password-protected sites as they may not be secure.
- Keep your devices locked in your hotel room safe when not in use.
- When returning home, reset all personal passwords used while abroad.
