This branch of The Contemporary offers an abundance of potential Instagram posts due to the unique and modern art and design. In 2017, the museum was awarded The Architect’s Newspaper’s Best of Design Award for Adaptive Reuse, and anyone who is fortunate enough to stroll by will see why. Eric Bunge, one of the judges for the competition, described the building as “simultaneously serious and whimsical, the project is a beacon not only for Austin, but for adaptive reuse in general - inspiring for its inventiveness.”

Hamilton Pool

Hamilton Pool Preserve was designated a nature preserve by the Travis County Commissioner's Court in 1990. Located 3/4 mile upstream from its confluence with the Pedernales River, Hamilton Creek spills out over limestone outcroppings to create a 50-foot waterfall as it plunges into the head of a steep box canyon. The waterfall never completely dries up, but in dry times it does slow to a trickle. However, the pool's water level stays pretty constant, even during periods of drought.
Laguna Gloria

Laguna Gloria is part of The Contemporary’s “Museum Without Walls” program, which aims to provide the public with outdoor exhibits at diverse locations around Austin. The entire museum is outdoors, and a trail extending out from the back door of the visitors center leads you through an alluring circuit of contemporary art. The diverse exhibits include works from local, national and international artists. The time to complete the circuit ranges between 30 minutes to an hour.
Mayfield Park

The Mayfield–Gutsch Estate, now named Mayfield Park, is a historic cottage, gardens and nature preserve in west Austin, Texas on a bluff overlooking Lake Austin. Originally built in the 1870s, the cottage was purchased by former Texas Secretary of State Allison Mayfield in 1909.
Wooldridge Square Park

Wooldridge Park, also known as Wooldridge Square, is an urban park in downtown Austin, Texas. The park consists of a city block containing a natural basin whose sides slope inward to form an amphitheater with a bandstand at its center. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Barton Springs Pool

Barton Springs is a set of four natural water springs located at Barton Creek on the grounds of Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, resulting from water flowing through the Edwards Aquifer. The largest spring, Main Barton Spring, supplies water to Barton Springs Pool, a popular recreational destination in Austin.
Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail

The Hike-and-Bike Trail is a low-grade trail, most of which is wide enough to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrian traffic, making it a leisurely, enjoyable ride for cyclists, runners and families alike. Because the trail winds through downtown, there are access points and parking all along the route, making it easy to choose your distance, detours, and side trips, all in view of the Austin skyline. Whether you prefer to ride the trail’s entire 10-mile loop or take a shorter, more leisurely ride, we recommend taking the time to take a dip in either Barton Springs or Deep Eddy Pool, both of which are spring-fed pools on either side of Lady Bird Lake.

Mount Bonnell

Zilker Park

Zilker Metropolitan Park is a recreational area in south Austin, Texas at the juncture of Barton Creek and the Colorado River that comprises over 350 acres of publicly owned land. It is named after its benefactor, Andrew Jackson Zilker, who donated the land to the city in 1917.
The Paramount Theater

The Hezikiah Haskell House

Originally built by a formerly enslaved man just after the Civil War, the 1879 Haskell House stands as a reminder of Clarksville’s historic roots. Across generations, the home has also served as a place of worship and the site of a popular lunch program for seniors. Hezikiah Haskell, a union soldier and then a Buffalo Soldier, came to own the house by marriage. After the death of Hezikiah Haskell Jr. in 1976, it was deeded to the City and became a symbol of this Freedom Colony’s early history.

Old Bakery & Emporium

The Lundberg Bakery is a historic building in downtown Austin, Texas. It is located at 1006 Congress Avenue, half a block south of the Texas State Capitol grounds. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 17, 1969.
Oakwood Cemetery & Oakwood Cemetery Chapel

The history of the people buried in Oakwood Cemetery tells the story of Austin. As these people settled in Austin, they helped build the culture of the city, and the Capitol of Texas. Staff research produces digital exhibits which are published quarterly. These exhibits explore a theme. Staff collaborates with community groups and individual subject matter experts to produce content. Cultural events often accompany exhibits.
Oakwood Cemetery holds approximately 23,000 burials within the 40 acres. Approximately 15,000 burials have monuments to mark the location of the burial. All lots were sold to families long ago, but families still bury people in their lots. In 1914, the City of Austin expanded another 18 acres east of Comal Street for the Oakwood Cemetery Annex.
