Staying safe in Hong Kong (SAR)
A Message from KPMG Global Security
Petty street crime (pickpocketing, luggage theft) is the principal risk for business travelers to Hong Kong. Overall levels of crime are typically low, though all visitors should take common personal measures to avoid being victimized.
Please take the following personal precautions:
- Upon arrival to your room, familiarize yourself with the hotel’s emergency exit locations and evacuation routes.
- Use prearranged ground transportation through the hotel or event organizers.
- Always carry a copy of your ID and passport/visa with you.
- Ensure your mobile device is sufficiently charged before leaving the hotel.
- Use ATM machines at the hotel or a bank and avoid any street-facing terminals.
- Maintain a low profile outside the hotel and do not carry anything in plain view that might be considered of value (mobile devices, expensive jewelry, etc.).
- Exercise vigilance if visiting popular night clubs and entertainment areas as these areas typically have higher crime rates.
- In the event of any security checks (by police or customs officials for example) on personal belongings and devices, adopt a cooperative approach and do not engage in any potentially suspicious behavior such as deleting or hiding items.
- Short-notice gatherings and protests are possible in Hong Kong – these should be avoided due to the potential for unrest.
- Contact emergency services (dial 999) in an emergency. Additionally, see below for how to report incidents or obtain advice from KPMG Global Security and International SOS.
- Additional travel safety advice is available at the KPMGI Global Security – Business Travel Security and Risk Management page.
Reporting Incidents
- In the event of a security or medical situation requiring advice or support, KPMG personnel may contact the International SOS Assistance Center in Hong Kong at +852 2528 9900. The Assistance Center is available to you 24/7/365 and there is no fee to call.
- KPMG personnel should download the IntlSOS Assistance app onto your smart phone prior to travel. Visit app.internationalsos.com from your smartphone’s browser or go to your phone’s app store. When you first start the app, use your KPMG email address to register. During setup, you may be asked to enter KPMG’s membership number, which is 1CPA1111.
