Staying safe in Johannesburg
A Message from KPMG Global Security
Street crime is the principal risk for business travelers to Johannesburg. All visitors should take personal measures to avoid being victimized. It is particularly important to exercise caution during hours of darkness as this is when muggings and robberies escalate. We recommend that everyone use pre-arranged ground transportation for all movements to activities outside the hotel.
Please take the following personal precautions:
- Avoid using KPMG branded luggage or wearing KPMG branded attire on your travel days. Company logos are often equated with wealth, therefore highlighting the wearer as a target.
- Upon arrival to your room, familiarize yourself with the hotel’s emergency exit locations and evacuation routes.
- Use prearranged ground transportation through the hotel or event organizers.
- Always carry a copy of your ID and passport/visa with you.
- Ensure your mobile device is sufficiently charged before leaving the hotel.
- Travel in pairs or groups rather than alone when exploring outside the hotel. For the safety and well-being of women attendees and family members, it's important to be aware that South Africa, in general, has reported elevated levels of incidents related to sexual assault. As a precautionary measure, we advise that women avoid venturing outside the hotel grounds alone.
- Use ATM machines at the hotel or a bank and avoid any street-facing terminals.
- Maintain a low profile outside the hotel and do not carry anything in plain view that might be considered of value (mobile devices, expensive jewelry, etc.).
- Exercise vigilance if visiting popular night clubs and entertainment areas as they are locations with higher crime rates.
- Immediately contact the police (10111 or +27 11 375 5911) or the fire/ambulance service (10177) in the event of a security or medical emergency. Additionally, see below for how to report incidents to KPMG Global Security and International SOS.
Information Security Measures
- Avoid connecting to public wi-fi connections. If you must do so, use your VPN and select the “Always-Tunnel” option from the Group dropdown.
- Ensure all software, including anti-virus protection and any security patches, are up to date prior to travel. Do not update software while away.
- Turn off Wi-fi and Bluetooth when not in use.
- When you return home, consider changing passwords on accounts that you’ve accessed if you suspect any issues. Also monitor your financial statements for fraudulent charges.
Reporting Incidents
- KPMG personnel may contact International SOS (24/7 at +27 (0) 11 541 1300 in the event of an urgent medical or security situation requiring support.
- KPMG personnel should download the IntlSOS Assistance app onto your smart phone prior to travel. Visit app.internationalsos.com from your smartphone’s browser or go to your phone’s app store. When you first start the app, use your KPMG email address to register. You may be asked to enter KPMG’s membership number, which is 1CPA1111.
A reminder regarding COVID-19
Please ensure you take personal health precautions to protect yourself and others. If you feel ill and believe you may have Covid, or if you test positive, please isolate in your room, and contact one of the event team for guidance and assistance.
