Plenary 1: BEPS 2.0 – What’s next for Africa?
-
We will begin our 2023 Summit with opening remarks from Joubert Botha, Head of Tax & Legal, KPMG in South Africa, who will outline the program for our two days together.
We will then be joined by Wole Obayomi, Africa Head of Tax and Partner, KPMG in Nigeria, David Linke, Global Head of Tax & Legal, KPMG International; and Victoria Heard, EMA Head of Tax & Legal, and Partner, KPMG in the UK who will unpack the latest disruption and uncertainties facing tax leaders, and explore how they are reacting and strategizing to stay ahead.
The focus of this first plenary will l be on the OECD's Inclusive Framework on BEPS which has been continuously evolving to help address key issues, such as tax avoidance, ensuring coherence of international tax rules and, ultimately, promoting a more transparent tax environment. Today, BEPS 2.0 looks to address the challenges arising from the taxation of the digital economy. But how relevant are these measures for Africa?
Our keynote speaker, Logan Wort from the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), will discuss the relevance and challenges, as well as what the future holds for Africa from a BEPS 2.0 perspective, after which he will join a panel moderated by Conrad Turley, KPMG Head of ASPAC Tax Policy and including Keith Engel, CEO, SAIT; and Wasoudeo Balloo, KPMG Africa Tax BEPS 2.0 Lead & Head of Tax, KPMG Mauritius; to delve deeper into this topic.Speaking at this session:

Data & Analytics
-
Revenue authorities across the world are looking for your organization's tax data. Data and technology are underpinning a paradigm shift and revenue authorities are driving digitalization, adopting e-invoicing and real-time reporting. With regulatory and business change top of mind combined with stakeholder demands for more value from tax functions, tax leaders need more visibility and insights into the business and tax processes.
This collaborative session will explore how tax data and technology have become core assets for tax authorities and how tax leaders may best position themselves to be in control of their tax data. We will bring together KPMG global and local experts to talk with tax leaders on how to unlock the value in their tax data with robust analytical solutions to help put tax leaders in control of their tax data.

Transfer Pricing developments in Africa
-
Since the BEPS initiative, most African jurisdictions have significantly enhanced their local transfer pricing regimes including upskilling tax inspectors, leading to an uptake of transfer pricing related queries and audits on the continent. In addition, initiatives such as tax inspectors without borders and various ATAF actions have further led to a focus on transfer pricing compliance by both tax administrations as well as taxpayers
In this session, professionals from KPMG member firms in Africa will unpack recent transfer pricing related developments and some practical observations.

Plenary 3: The T in ESG
-
Amid disruption and uncertainty in the world, companies are being asked how they positively impact their country and the world. ESG has become a priority on the agenda of C-Suite executives requiring companies to determine how they stack up on the “ESG rating card”. This plenary will explore how tax can, if not properly managed, make being “ESG compliant” costly as well as how it can be utilized to potentially reduce such cost and improve the process.
The plenary will open with an introduction by the KPMG Africa Lead for ESG, Martins Arogie, who will set the landscape of how tax impacts the ESG agenda with a specific lens for the African continent. Following this, he will be joined by Troopti Desai, Executive, Group Tax, MTN in a fireside chat discussing how MTN has built tax into their company’s ESG journey. Lastly, to explore the tax considerations that impact the pillars of ESG, including impact investing and tax transparency reporting, we will be joined by a panel moderated by Loek Helderman, Global ESG Tax Lead, KPMG International, and including: Troopti Desai, Executive, Group Tax, MTN; Dolf Broodryk, Implats; and Pravir Jeaven, Associate Director, KPMG in South Africa.Speaking at this session:

Plenary 4 - Tax Talent Management
-
As companies look beyond the pandemic, they are asking their tax functions to play a bigger advisory role. Tax leaders have been asked to provide strategic counsel on emerging issues on everything from new digital business models to sustainable transformation. They need to transform their technology infrastructures to free up team capacity, operate more efficiently, and use data more effectively. Meanwhile, all this change is happening during an unprecedented global shift.
The plenary session will explore trending themes around talent attraction, retention, remote work and the mobility of tax professionals in both the private and public sector on the African continent.
We will hear the perspectives of C-Suite executives on the importance of the tax leader role within the organization, a private sector lens panel which includes clients and KPMG experts and lastly a public sector lens panel, hearing from Revenue Authorities.

Remote working implications for employers in Africa
-
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic sparked into life an accelerated move from office-based working to working remotely. While in some countries, remote work was nothing unusual, in others, it was completely unheard of. What is certain, however, is that employees and employers have realized that remote working is possible. The question remains whether it is manageable in the long term given the multitude of risk associated with, in particular, international remote workers.
In this session we will have a facilitated round table discussion exploring the current challenges and opportunities faced by employers in light of greater remote working, both locally and internationally.
