Staying safe in Cape Town
A Message from KPMG Global Security
As in any large city, there are security risks in visiting Cape Town. The overall travel security risk rating for Cape Town is MEDIUM. The main risks to travelers are high levels of street crime (including armed robbery, carjacking, pickpocketing and bag snatching). These thefts frequently occur in tourist and shopping areas, marketplaces, transportation hubs, and other crowded areas.
You must exercise vigilance to ensure a safe visit. The following are recommended precautions:
- Prearrange transport to and from the airport (and anytime moving about the city) using a known, reliable service. Exercise caution on the road from the airport to the city as robberies are known to occur along this route.
- Arrange your travel so that you arrive and depart during daylight hours.
- Avoid public transportation.
- Maintain a heightened awareness and take action when moving about the city to protect yourself from street criminals.
- While traveling in a vehicle, make sure to keep car doors locked and all windows closed as criminals will try to enter cars stuck in traffic.
- Do not carry anything in plain view that might be considered of value.
- There have been reports of luggage theft from the Cape Town International Airport, so be mindful of your belongings while there.
- Do not walk on the streets after dark by yourself.
- Be vigilant at ATM machines, and use machines at banks, hotels, and other secure locations.
- Immediately contact the police (dial 10111 or +27-21-4678000) or fire department (dial 112 or +27-21-5351100) in the event of a security or medical emergency. At the hotel, call the front desk.
A note on information security when traveling abroad:
- When using personal computers, smart phones, and other digital devices, use caution when deciding to use personal password-protected sites as they may not be secure.
- Keep your devices locked in your hotel room safe when not in use.
- When returning home, reset all personal passwords used while abroad.
